Can Villa save themselves from relegation?

Every season there seems to be one team who manages to hit a terrible patch of form at exactly the wrong time and finds themselves dragged into the relegation battle. Sadly, that team this season seems to be Aston Villa. Villa have been mired in a dreadful run of form in the past few months and Tuesday night’s defeat to Bolton and yesterday’s draw at West Brom sees them only 3 points above Bolton, who occupy the last place in the relegation zone, but Bolton have a game in hand.

Tottenham’s Fall From Grace: Where Harry Went Wrong

After a poor start to the season, losses to both Manchester teams in the first two games, Tottenham were able to get their season back on track, and up until the end of February it looked like a very promising season for Tottenham, despite elimination from the Europa league. After thumping Newcastle 5-0 at home, it has been very much downhill from there. At the Christmas stage of the season most people had predicted that Tottenham had that third premier league place nailed on and would surely remain in the top four come the end of the season. But how does a team go from looking certain to achieving a third place finish and a genuine chance at an F.A. Cup final to finishing the season with only a Europa League place. Winning the F.A. Cup along with a champions league finish would be an ideal season for Redknapp and Tottenham and would be the perfect reward for all of Redknapp’s hard work since arriving at White Hart Lane. Here is a look at some of the things that has hindered Tottenham’s performance of late.

Boardroom incompetence throws Wanderers to the Wolves

As slapstick relegations go, Wolves’ departure to the Championship after a three-year stint in the top-tier was relatively inevitable. On the pitch anyway, after the 5-0 mauling at Fulham on the 2nd of March, and falling ultimately 7 points adrift as they met their end at home to Manchester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers were long since resigned to the trips to Burnley and Charlton that await them in the next season.
One win in the past 21 matches drew the air of gloom that filled over Molineux during City’s win, as the torrid weather provided the pathetic fallacy for the day. However, it was one particular defeat in this wretched run that opened the door for the West-Midland brand of lunacy that drove Wolves to a speedier fate.

Width, Manchester City’s biggest problem this season.

Despite looking at one point like they would run away with the league title, Manchester City are currently in a position where their only hope of finishing above Manchester United looks like goal difference. Notwithstanding Lee Dixon’s exceptionally perceptive insight that football results are down to a combination of form, fitness and the teams on the pitch. What has been the reason for Manchester City seemingly throwing the title away? One of the most significant reasons is that they have often lacked width, and have consequently been, at times, easy to frustrate. City’s default formation this season has been a 4-2-3-1/4-2-2-2: a back 4, two holding midfielders, two nominal wide players who drift inside and two strikers, one of which often will often drop deep to help in build up play.
