EPL Newcomers Team Of The Season

May 19, 2014 by David Bolt

Sadly, the end of what has been an entertaining Premier League season is now upon us, and writers everywhere are picking their teams of the season, so I thought I’d do the same.

The problem I have with many of these teams is that, most of the time, it’s pretty obvious who will be in them and as a result, they don’t vary much from writer to writer. That’s not very interesting to me; and I’m sure none of you reading this need me to tell you how good a season Luis Suarez, Eden Hazard or Yaya Toure have had.

Cardiff accuse Crystal Palace of ‘Spying’

April 24, 2014 by David Bolt

On April 5th, Cardiff City lost a home game to Crystal Palace 0-3. This game was what’s termed a ‘six pointer’, meaning that the winning team not only gains three points, but they also stop a relegation rival getting three points. While this result was seen as a good win for Palace and a bad defeat for Cardiff, it was otherwise unremarkable.

Except for what has happened in the aftermath.

Nations League approved by UEFA

April 8, 2014 by David Bolt

One of the questions European football has been looking to answer in the past few years is what to do to improve International friendlies. A lot of international friendlies are not competitive enough to be of benefit of teams, as well as being pretty boring to watch for paying fans and TV audiences. Most are setup more as a money-spinning exercise for a national association than as a meaningful way to improve a national team.

Last week, UEFA outlined a plan to revamp and hopefully improve international football in Europe, by announcing the creation of the Nations League which will begin in 2018 and be played on most of the international dates currently occupied by friendlies.
