The Celtic Lisbon Lions team that broke all sorts of records in the 60′s.

A collection of some of the most interesting statistics in football. Credit to /r/soccer for a lot of the below statistics.

    • Juventus haven’t received a single red card in all competitions this season.
    • Spurs haven’t won a single game without Gareth Bale scoring since January 1st, 2013. Also, when Bale joined Spurs he didn’t win any of his first 24 games.

Manchester United cantered to their 20th league title on Monday night, ending the foregone conclusion the title race had become towards the final third of the season.  The emphatic gap between United and City stands as a testament to the frightening consistency Ferguson’s side displayed this season.  This in itself is an ode to the seemingly unending ability Sir Alex has of breeding winning teams time and time again.  When you compare the two squads of the Manchester teams, there is no obvious difference in quality between the two.  The difference lies only in the managers.

This is the start of a weekly series we will be doing on players of the past from all over the world that we feel have been forgotten or were under-appreciated during their playing days.  This may give some people a chance to view players they had misremembered or even bring these talents to those who have never heard of them.

Karim Bagheri was an Iranian midfielder who came to prominence during the late 90s and through to the 00s.  He possessed an almighty right foot and frequently scored goals from midfield most players can only dream about.  Despite being one of the iconic players in Asia during his playing years, his career went by relatively unnoticed by most in the West.

Wednesday night’s match in the Copa Libertadores between Atlético Mineiro and Arsenal de Sarandi gave us a little bit of everything – beautiful goals, controversy and even some drama at the very end.  It was a game that cemented the Brazilian side’s claim to be looked upon as one of the favourites now for this tournament.  Atlético Mineiro have won 12 games in a row now and hold a 100% record in this year’s Copa Libertadores so far.

On Friday night’s home match against Genclerbirligi played host to some of the worst finishing I have witnessed so far this season.  First off, goal machine Burak Yilmaz comically missed an open net from an Albert Riera cross halfway through the first half:

    Mazzarri

At the end of the 90s and the turn of the millennium, the 3-5-2 (and its variants) was at the center of some of the biggest successes in the game. However, the formation began to fade into obscurity from about 2003 onward, until it was brought back from the dead around 2008 and is now thriving again.
