The announcement of the Chilean international Alexis Sanchez to Manchester United on Monday evening sent shockwaves around Europe. It was a statement of intent signing from the Red Devils who are looking to win their first Premier League honour since legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson retired on the back end of the 12/13 season. Sanchez’s winning mentality and hunger to succeed makes him a perfect match to Mourinho’s Manchester United outfit, the capture of Sanchez has gone a long way in near perfectly shaping and moulding a Jose Mourinho type of team. Although it is a very big ask for the Red Devils to win the league in this current campaign, Sanchez will be tasked with the aim of restoring the club to future glory and help turn Manchester United back into the Manchester United that most if not all teams used to fear.
Alexis Sanchez has all the attributes and credentials needed to help make Manchester United a force to be reckoned with. Manager Jose Mourinho will hope he can hit the ground running straight away and hope he can help his team challenge on three fronts for the remainder of the domestic and European campaigns. His profound experience and overall know-how will help act as a crucial component particularly in Europe where coming up against major established European powerhouses will not phase him whatsoever. The signing of the Chile international was seen as a statement signing and one that will see him take the famous iconic number 7 shirt. This historic shirt was worn in the past by Old Trafford legends Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham, George Best. Since Cristiano Ronaldo left for Real Madrid in 2009, the likes of mercurial wingers Netherlands international Memphis Depay and now at Paris Saint Germain Argentine Angel Di Maria tried but ultimately failed to live up to the expectations of wearing the famous number 7 shirt, however Sanchez with his Premier League experience, he is more than capable of taking on the mantle of the club and being a complete success during his time in Manchester.
Manchester United fans will be hoping that the Chilean can restore United to future glories and honours. Since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, United fans for the most part have been accustomed to disappointment and underachievement. Despite throwing millions and millions of pounds to the cause with a number of new additions coming in and looking to change the fortunes of the club, i.e. the likes of the Belgian talisman Romelu Lukaku and record signing Paul Pogba, it is the capture of Sanchez which looks to be the missing piece of the jigsaw which for so long has been missing going forward.
The live-wire Alexis Sanchez on his day is a truly world class player, and more importantly a world beater – he can single handedly change a game on his own. With a stable defensive unit behind him in Serbian enforcer Nemanja Matic dictating and controlling play will only allow Sanchez to play his natural creative play. Sanchez is a versatile player, a player who can operate in any of the attacking positions, his versatility is an attractive trait for the Portuguese Mourinho.
Shortly after the announcement of the Chilean, club legend Ryan Giggs stated in his sky sports column that “Sanchez is a ready-made superstar”. Further adding that “signing Sanchez is similar to Robin van Persie in the sense that they’re getting a ready-made superstar”. Seeing Sanchez come in will only add further competition which is always healthy. It can help other players in the team to up their performances. This can happen when top players come in and those around them lift their levels, and there will be some difficult selection decisions for manager Jose Mourinho.
As well as looking to make his mark domestically, an added bonus is that Sanchez is eligible to play in the UEFA Champions League. To have somebody like that, who will not be fazed by playing in the big games – this makes the squad stronger and fearsome going forward. Manchester United have created a statement with the addition of Sanchez, now it is up to the player to take the mantle of this giant club and perform consistently.
