Atletico Madrid beat Marseille in Europa League final

Atletico Madrid defeated French side Marseille 3-0 on Wednesday night to win the Europa League. Veteran forward Fernando Torres lifted the trophy, the only trophy he has ever won with the Spanish side in two spells.

The attack-minded Marseille made a bright start to proceedings. Striker Valere Germain found himself put through on goal by Dmitri Payet on four minutes, only for the striker to fire wide from ten yards out.

The miss proved majorly costly to the French side on 21 minutes when they conceded the opening goal. Marseille central midfielder Anguissa lost the ball to Gabi in a dangerous position and the midfielder put Antoine Griezmann through on goal. The Frenchman rarely misses in those sorts of positions and fired low into the net past Steve Mandanda in the Marseille goal.

The French side’s night went from bad to worse on 31 minutes, as key playmaker Dimitri Payet limped off the pitch in tears due to injury. Griezmann had a second goal just four minutes into the second period.

Koke played the forward in at a tight angle, but Griezmann managed to chip the ball beyond Mandanda into the goal, with strike-partner Diego Costa following in on the goalline.

Marseille came close to getting back into the game, as Kostas Mitroglu’s header from Morgan Sanson’s cross hit the post and rolled to safety. The French side continued to attempt to get back into the game.

However, in true Atletico style, the Spanish side executed a perfect counter-attack for a third goal. A good team move involving Griezmann and Koke led to the ball landing at the feet of captain Gabi, who smashed a low effort into the corner of the net.

Griezmann was no doubt the star of the show. However, if reports are to be believed the French forward is unlikely to be at Atletico for much longer, with Barcelona reportedly set to agree to meet his release clause.

For now, though, Atletico Madrid fans can celebrate winning their second Europa League title, their third UEFA Cup/Europa League title.
