Barcelona are set to use Turkish winger Arda Turan as a makeweight in a deal to sign Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil in January, according to the Daily Star.
The German international’s contract with Arsenal runs out next summer. In fact, he would be free to discuss with any foreign club from January 1st about a summer move.
The 28-year-old’s rejection of new terms in north London had led to major speculation that he would leave the club in the winter transfer window. One of the clubs linked with a move for the German was Saturday’s opponents Manchester United.
However, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger recently stated that he believed that the playmaker would still be an Arsenal player beyond the closing of the January window.
The former Real Madrid star is reportedly valued at around £30million by the Gunners. The report suggests that Barcelona believe they can persuade the London club to sell and recoup something from the German star leaving the club.
The Catalan giant’s offer of including highly rated Turkish international Turan in the deal will appeal to Arsenal. Turan has struggled for regular first-team football at the Nou Camp after he shined at Atletico Madrid. Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde is reported to have told the player that he has no future in Catalonia.
Turan may be a ready-made replacement for Ozil, as the two players can play in similar positions.
One potential problem in Barcelona attempting to sign Ozil is the German’s massive wages demands. Arsenal have already refused to meet his demands of £350,000. Barcelona are unlikely to agree to the deal either, which could scupper the deal.
Ozil has been in fine form of late, producing five assists in as many Premier League outings. However, the playmaker has endured mixed fortunes at Arsenal and it looks like he will be plying his trade in pastures new in the near future.
