Known as much for his hairstyle as for his on-field prowess, Carlos Valderrama is one of the greatest midfielders to ever grace the game. A native of Colombia, he represented his country from 1985-1998. During this span of nearly 15 years, he made 111 appearances for Colombia, including captaining his country in three consecutive World Cups (Italy ’90, USA ’94, France ’98).
Valderrama spent most of his career in the Americas, playing for numerous Colombian and American clubs. The years he did spend in Europe were spent playing for Montpellier in France and Real Valladolid in Spain.
Toward the twilight of his career, Valderrama came to the USA to play in the MLS. He was instrumental in the growth of the upstart league, providing a respected name to help boost reputation. He played out the rest of his career in the MLS, playing for three teams over the course of six years.
