According to Sky Sports, Chelsea have put England number one Jordan Pickford at the top of their list of replacements for Thibaut Courtois, if as expected the Belgium international joins Real Madrid this summer.
The Everton goalkeeper is highly-rated, having produced impressive displays for Everton and previous club Sunderland, despite playing behind poor defences at both clubs.
His confident performances for England at the World Cup have raised his profile within the European game. He is now regarded as one of the best up and coming goalkeepers in Europe.
Courtois likely to leave
Courtois is likely to leave Stamford Bridge this summer, with his likely destination Madrid. The Belgian international has less than a year left on his current deal at Stamford Bridge, so the Blues could lose him next summer on a free transfer.
Courtois is a valuable asset, so that looks highly unlikely to happen. That means the Blues will cash-in on the former Atletico Madrid loanee by allowing him to leave for Los Blancos.
Ironically, the Belgian number one criticised Pickford during the World Cup, only to apologise in an interview after one the Red Devils games.
Pickford first choice
The report claims that Pickford is at the top of the Blues list to replace Courtois this summer. He is reportedly ahead of Stoke’s Jack Butland and Leicester City’s Kasper Schmeichel of prospective replacements for their talented Belgian international.
Any deal to sign Pickford would be a difficult one for Chelsea to complete with just two weeks left in the transfer window. The Toffees are unlikely to be willing to part with the goalkeeper who impressed at this summer’s World Cup.
If the Merseysiders are going to sell then it is only likely to be for a massive fee, which would hinder new Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri’s plans to strengthen his squad.
