Liverpool legend John Barnes has stated that Jurgen Klopp doesn’t necessarily need a trophy in order to be considered a success this season. In essence, what he was saying is that pushing Manchester City close is much more important than winning a ‘minor’ trophy, and while we can’t speak for him, if you read between the lines he is likely referencing the League Cup.
Whatever the case may be, however, this is an interesting topic of discussion to bring up. After all, it’s no secret that Jurgen Klopp has utterly transformed this Liverpool squad since arriving at Anfield, and he’s done so in a way that has the fans singing his name on a week by week basis. Following their heroic run to the Champions League final last season they’ve been able to keep hold of all of their major names, and they’ve even been able to add a few more.
Alas, while we can see where Barnes is coming from, we aren’t sure that we agree with him. Most fans analyse any season and look at whether or not they’ve been able to capture any silverware, and if they haven’t, it serves as a disappointing thing to look back on. Last season it would make sense to ‘run City close’ given how dominant they were, but after seeing them drop points already in the Premier League this season, there’s no reason to believe that Liverpool can’t realistically win the Premier League.
Plus, if they don’t, a piece of silverware still serves as proof that they were the best team in whatever competition they win it in. The fans are often awarded a great day out in the final, it gives the players memories that will last a lifetime, and it helps to break Klopp’s voodoo of not being able to win finals.
Do you think Jurgen Klopp needs to win a trophy this season?
