According to Sky Sports, Everton are set to snap up Brazilian winger Bernard on a free transfer, subject to a medical and gaining a work permit. The latter should not be a problem as the playmaker currently also has a Spanish passport.
The 25-year-old had previously been plying his trade in Shakhtar Donetsk but ran his contract down in order to secure a move to a big European league this summer.
A productive player in Ukraine
The diminutive Brazilian has been productive in his five years at Shakhtar scoring 14 times and producing 24 assists in 95 appearances in the Ukrainian top-flight. His performances have not gone unnoticed, as the playmaker had previously been linked with a move to the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool.
The winger has fitted into the system of boss Paulo Fonseca perfectly at Shakhtar. Fonseca was one of the candidates to be the next Everton boss prior to Marco Silva’s appointment. The pair plays a similar style of football, so Bernard should be an exciting addition to the Toffees squad.
Silva now has a number of attacking options available to him. The likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson, Theo Walcott and Cenk Tosun were all at the club prior to the summer signing of another Brazilian in Richarlison.
Bernard will just add to Silva’s attacking options heading to the new season. He could prove to be a highly shrewd signing by the Toffees this summer.
Toffees still busy in the transfer market
With just a few days to go the Toffees do not seem to be finished in the transfer market. The priority for the Merseysiders is signing a new centre-back, with Colombian international Yerry Mina supposedly the clubs top transfer target.
Everton have certainly improved their squad with the players who have arrived, and look set to arrive. However, if that new centre-back eludes them in the next few days then it could be a long hard season for the Toffees.
Will Bernard be a hit in the Premier League?
