England faces a friendly with the Netherlands on Friday night in Amsterdam. The game in the Dutch capital will mark the first game in charge for the Oranje’s new head coach Ronald Koeman.
The former Southampton and more recently Everton is a legend in his homeland. In fact, he is still a legend from his playing days worldwide.
While his legacy as a footballer will stand the test of time, his managerial career has been less impressive. Koeman has a mediocre record during his career in the dugout of clubs in Holland, England and Spain.
The experienced boss guided Southampton and Everton to the verge of the top echelons of English football. However, he then hit a ceiling, which he could not break through.
Everton’s performance under Koeman at the beginning of the Premier League campaign was nothing short of woeful.
If Koeman is a sentiment choice of boss by the Dutch FA, then the national team are in big trouble. The Netherlands tend to have a habit of appointing bosses on their good playing careers, with such greats as Marco van Basten and Danny Blind failing miserably at guiding the Netherlands back to greatest.
In terms of jobs in football, it is one of the most difficult ones in the international game, as there are big expectations placed on the Oranje every time they take to the field.
The problem for the Netherlands is that they are not producing the same class of player anymore. Recently two of the old guard Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben retired from the game. It is difficult to see any players of a similar class on the fringes of the Dutch side.
Ronald Koeman has a major task on his hands reviving the Oranje’s fortunes, even if they have won their last five games. The qualifiers for Euro 2020 will show if Koeman is capable of helping his homeland back to international prominence.
