The last Champions League quarter-final second legs of the Champions League produced some great moments of drama, with European behemoths Real Madrid and Bayern Munich booking their places in the last four of the competition.
Juventus travelled to face European champions Real Madrid with a 3-0 deficit to make up from the first leg at the Allianz Stadium in which they had lost 3-0. There seems little possibility of the Bianconeri turning things around at the home of the European champions.
However, they came mighty close to taking the game into extra-time time after levelling the aggregate scores. Max Allegri’s side made the perfect start, as veteran striker Mario Mandzukic found space at the far post to head home a cross from Sami Khedira after just two minutes.
The Croatian star doubled his and Juve’s tally with eight minutes remaining in the first half by again heading home at the back post, this time from a Stephen Liechtensteiner centre.
On the hour-mark, the visitors drew level in the tie. Keylor Navas made a terrible error to allow Juventus midfielder Blaise Matuidi to score from close-range. The tie looked to be heading for extra-time. Raphael Varane, Isco and Cristiano Ronaldo all missed good chances to put the game to bed.
However, the home side did eventually seal the win in the 97th minute in controversial style. English referee Michael Oliver pointed to the spot after Mehdi Benatia appeared to foul Lucas Vasquez.
The Juventus players were incensed and veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon must have taken things too far, as Oliver decided to issue him a straight red card for his protests at the decision.
The man for the big moment Cristiano Ronaldo made no mistake with his spot-kick to send the European champions through to a record eighth consecutive Champions League semi-final.
Elsewhere, Bayern Munich and Sevilla finished goalless at the Allianz Arena, a result that saw the Bavarians go through to the last four. The biggest talking point of the game was a red card for Sevilla forward Joaquin Correa in stoppage-time, after a poor challenge on Javi Martinez.
