According to the Daily Mirror, Liverpool are interested in signing wingers Riyad Mahrez of Leicester and Monaco’s Thomas Lemar.
The Merseysiders look set to sell Brazilian playmaker Philippe Coutinho this month to Catalan giants Barcelona, who have been long-term admirers of the former Inter star.
The youngster is one of the brightest young attacking players in European football. The wingers rise to prominence at Monaco in the past few seasons has led to big interest from elsewhere. Lemar’s performances have already led to links with moves to Chelsea and most notably Arsenal, who were reportedly close to signing the France international in the summer.
However, it seems that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is a big admirer of the talented wide man. The Mirror report suggests that the Merseysiders are in contact with the Ligue One champions over the winger’s availability. Lemar would not be a direct replacement for Coutinho, although the Brazilian has played in the wide forward positions at times during his recent Liverpool career.
Elsewhere, though, French sports newspaper L-Equipe are reporting that the Reds have been in touch with Leicester about the possibility of signing Algerian international winger Riyad Mahrez.
Recent speculation over Mahrez’s future has led to Foxes boss Claude Puel to state that the skilful attacking midfielder is happy at the club. However, Mahrez had handed in a transfer request in the summer, as he wished to move to a club playing in the Champions League. Liverpool would be able to offer Mahrez that chance.
Like Lemar, Mahrez had previously been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal. However, the Gunners were reportedly put off making a move for the star because of Leicester’s valuation. Arsenal could renew their interest in Mahrez or Lemar if forward Alexis Sanchez moves on in the January transfer window.
Will Liverpool sign Lemar or Mahrez to replace Coutinho?
