According to the Independent, Everton are close to completing the signing of Barcelona left-back Lucas Digne for a fee in the region of £22million.
The 25-year-old is a highly-rated France international. However, the former Lille star has struggled to dislodge Spanish international Jordi Alba from the left-back spot in Catalonia.
Digne has made 46 appearances in his two campaigns with the Spanish champions, but only 12 of them have been in La Liga. His lack of appearances led to the full-back omission from the French squad that won the World Cup in Russia.
Digne has already wrote a farewell message on his Instagram page to everybody connected with the Catalan club, thanking them for making his childhood dream come true.
Digne is likely to compete with former England left-back Leighton Baines for the left-back spot on Merseyside. Baines will be 34-years-old in December, so is in the twilight of his career. The Toffees lacked back up in the position last season when right-back Cuco Martina had to play out of position for much of the campaign to cover for the injured Baines.
The Toffees were also reportedly interest in Digne’s Barcelona teammate centre-back Yerry Mina. However, the Colombian international has also been linked with moves to Manchester United and Wolves.
The 23-year-old is keen to remain with the Catalan giants and prove himself. He has stated he will not push for a move, and will only move if Barcelona wants to him.
Everton’s director of football Marcel Brands could be a busy man leading up to the transfer window shutting, as the Toffees are in desperate need of a new centre-back after a number of poor defensive displays in pre-season, including losing 4-1 against Rennes in their last pre-season clash against Rennes.
Will Lucas Digne be a good signing for Everton?
