Manchester City v Arsenal League Cup final preview

On Sunday, Manchester City and Arsenal go head-to-head in the Carabao Cup final, as the pair fight to win the first domestic silverware of the season.

Manchester City have no doubt been the team of the year in the English top-flight. However, their chances of winning the quadruple went up in smoke, as the Citizens suffered a 1-0 defeat at League One Wigan to exit the FA Cup in the fifth round.

However, Pep Guardiola’s side still have three trophies in their sights in the shape of the Premier League, Champions League and of course the League Cup.

Perennial silverware collector Guardiola has yet to win a trophy with City. The Citizens recording a third League Cup victory in the last five years could lead to bigger and brighter things for the Catalan boss in Manchester.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has not won the League Cup in nearly 22 years as Gunners boss. In fact, it is the only domestic trophy he has failed to win in his time in north London.

The Gunners have made it to the final of this competition on eight occasions, winning it twice in 1987 and 1993. However, their five final losses, including in 2011 against Birmingham are the most of any team in the history of the competition.

Team News

France international full-back Benjamin Mendy remains on the sidelines through injury. Fabian Delph had been covering in the left-back spot but is suspended for this clash. Danilo or Oleksandr Zinchenko will start in the position. Raheem Sterling is a major doubt after picking up an injury, while Gabriel Jesus could return to the City squad after two months out injured.

Arsenal are still without Spanish playmaker Santi Cazorla and French international striker Alexandre Lacazette, who will both miss out through injury. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will start up front in Lacazette’s absence. January signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan is ineligible after featuring for Manchester United earlier in the competition. Midfielders Aaron Ramsey and Mesut Ozil are also both fitness doubts.

Manchester City are big favourites to win the game. However, games between these two teams have been relatively tight in recent seasons. I expect a Manchester City victory and lots of goals.
