On Tuesday night, European champions Real Madrid and Bayern Munich both made significant strides in their bid to make it the Champions League semi-finals.
Real Madrid recorded a magnificent 3-0 win at Juventus in their first leg tie at the Allianz Stadium. Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring after just three minutes for Los Blancos from an Isco cross.
However, it was the Portuguese stars second goal on 64 minutes that will be remembered for a long time to come. The ball came into the penalty area and with his back to goal, the 33-year-old produced a brilliant bicycle kick to give Gigi Buffon in the Juventus goal no hope of keeping the effort out.
Things went from bad to worse for the Bianconeri on 66 minutes, as star striker Paolo Dybala was dismissed after receiving his second yellow card of the game. The Spanish giants all but wrapped the tie up on 72 minutes, as full-back Marcelo finished off a good team move.
Another giant of the European game Bayern Munich, recorded a 2-1 win against at Sevilla to give themselves a narrow advantage for the second leg back in Bavaria.
Vincenzo Montella’s side took the lead on 32 minutes, as Pablo Sarabia beat Juan Benat to cross to finish past Sven Ulreich. The lead was short-lived, though, as the visitors were level again five minutes later.
Frank Ribery’s cross hit Jesus Navas and went past stand-in goalkeeper David Soria in the home goal. The winning goal arrived on 68 minutes. It all stemmed from another Ribery cross that found midfielder Thiago Alcantara at the far post. The Spanish international’s header took a deflection off Escudero and once again beat Soria.
Sevilla faces an uphill struggle getting back into the tie in the second leg, as Bayern have won 19 of their last 21 home games in the Champions League.
