As we await the Premier League’s return, we thought it’d be interesting to take a look back on one of the most controversial ideas in recent times: Game 39. For those of you who don’t remember, Richard Scudamore proposed the idea of every single Premier League team playing a game abroad at some point during the season. Of course, as you can imagine, this was met with pretty heavy criticism from all different sides.
There’s no particular rhyme or reason as to why we’re taking a look at this now, but it came into our head and we felt the need to discuss it – if only to shine a light on how utterly ridiculous it was.
The best thing about the Premier League is the pride of the English fans, with thousands upon thousands of them still coming out in their numbers every single week in order to support their team. While Game 39 would’ve allowed for some interesting possibilities in the realms of different locations, it would’ve been a clear money grab, and there are plenty of those already in the game.
If you want the chance to watch your team and you don’t live in England there are many ways in which to do it. You’ve got European competition and pre-season friendlies, both of which usually take place in foreign countries (if you’re in the top flight that is).
We aren’t going to pretend like this is relevant in the present day, but given the way football is going, we wouldn’t be entirely surprised to see this being floated around again as an idea. If it does, though, we can only hope that it’s met with a swift dismissal if only to avoid pure mockery and ridicule from the rest of world football.
