Despite registering one of their best results of the season against Manchester United, Southampton still took it upon themselves to sack Mark Hughes at the weekend. It was a move that many fans saw coming and many fans agreed with, especially when they discovered that Ralph Hasenhuttl was set to be Hughes’ replacement.
The former RB Leipzig boss serves as a return to Southampton’s roots in the last few years, in the sense that they’ve hired a manager who seems to be forward thinking with the right kind of direction in mind for the club. The Saints hadn’t been viewed as relegation contenders until Hughes came along and that should tell you all you need to know about his reputation, and how far he’s fallen in recent years.
Hasenhuttl is an exciting appointment, which is the kind of thing that Southampton fans are more used to seeing. They were once considered to be a club who could invade the European spots for many years to come, and they could still live up to that so long as they take his appointment more seriously.
At the very least this was a smart move from the south coast club and it’s good to see the pull the trigger on it because if they didn’t, this could’ve been a lot uglier. It would’ve been horrible to see a club with the kind of background that Southampton have falling down into the Championship, especially when there are so many other objectively poor clubs in the division. They’ll be in action against Tottenham tomorrow, in what should be one of the more intriguing games of the midweek matches.
Do you think that Southampton made the right decision, and how far do you think that they could rise under the guidance of someone like Ralph Hasenhuttl?
