West Ham and Palace pull off massive wins

The action in Tuesday night’s Premier League could prove pivotal in the fight for survival in the English top-flight. Four games took place, with three involving teams at the bottom of the table.

West Ham recorded a vital 2-1 win over fellow strugglers West Brom at the London Stadium. The Baggies took the lead on the half-hour mark, as James McClean’s effort deflected off Irons midfielder Pedro Obiang and beat Adrian in the home goal.

The Hammers drew level on 59 minutes, though. Aaron Cresswell fired in a cross and Andy Carroll rose highest to head past Ben Foster. Just as the game looked to be heading for a draw, the home side found a winner four minutes into stoppage-time.

Mark Arnautovic found Carroll, who from an acute angle fired an effort past Foster and into the net. The victory was a massive one for the home side. It took David Moyes’ side up to 16th place in the top-flight table. However, the team from the capital are still just a point above the drop zone. West Brom are now four points from the safety mark of 17th position.

Elsewhere Crystal Palace improved their chances of survival with a 2-1 victory at fellow strugglers Southampton. The home side took the lead through a Shane Long strike. However, second-half goals from James McArthur and Luka Milivojevic gave the Eagles a vital victory. The win took Roy Hodgson’s side up to 14th in the table, four points clear of the relegation zone.

Southampton, though have slipped to 17th place in the league table. In fact, the Saints are now only outside the drop zone on goal difference. A run of nine league games without a victory is a concerning one for the south coast side.
