It’s only fair that the first post on my blog is about the biggest football upset of 2012. Zambia winning the African Cup of Nations against Ivory Coast in a thrilling encounter. They never won this competition despite this game being their third final appearance (lost in 1974 and 1994) while Ivory Coast won it once already in 1992 and lost in 2006. Who would have thought that Zambia were going to be champions?
Definitely not the odds; Zambia were at 11/2 for winning, 5/2 for drawing and 4/7 for losing. Their future looked grim. A friend and I were debating whether to take a risk and bet 50$ on Zambia, but we decided against it. The ivory coast line up was scary and kind of intimidating.
Ivory Coast starting lineup (4-3-3): Boubacar Barry; Siaka Tiene, Sol Bamba, Kolo Toure, Jean-Jacques Gosso; Cheick Tiote, Didier Zokora, Yaya Toure; Gervinho, Didier Drogba, Salomon Kalou.
Zambia starting lineup (4-4-2): Kennedy Mweene; Davies Nkausu, Stophira Sunzu, Hijani Himoonde, Joseph Musonda; Isaac Chansa, Crisamba Lungu, Nathan Sinkala, Rainford Kalaba; Christopher Katongo, Emmanuel Mayuka.
As a football fan when I look at the Ivory Coast lineup I say to myself that this team is really strong. Kolo Toure, Cheick Tiote, Zokora, Yaya Toure, Gervinho, Drogba and Kalou, all of these are big names in the football world. And to be honest with you, I didn’t know anyone from the Zambia team before the ACN started.
This was going to be an emotional match for Zambia as they looked to honor the memory of the players that died in the plane crash in 1993. And they did exactly that. One of the big moments of the game was when Didier Drogba missed a penalty at the 70th minute, he could have sealed it for the Elephants. The game then went into extra-time and later penalties where Zambia won it by 8-7. Here is a video of the high quality penalty kicks, enjoy.
